Artist's Commentary
On behalf of the movie going public, ENOUGH WITH THE 3D MOVIES ALREADY!
Ok, this episode is part social commentary, part parody of the movie going experience.
I spent 4 days and nights working on this one... in order to achieve my goal of releasing this episode the same weekend that "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" is released back into theaters... in 3D! I know it's the first one, and they need to be released in order... but it's hard to be excited about it. But, I can see myself wanting to see the original trilogy again... so whenever they get around to part 4, 5 and 6... I'll likely be there. Maybe by then all movies will be shown in 4D... altering time and the universe for a better movie going experience!
I'd like as many people as possible to see this episode... so if you enjoyed it, copy the episode link and post it on Facebook... or send a link on to your friends! I appreciate any word of mouth you can give on my comic series! Thanks!
This episode required new everything... backgrounds, props, movie posters. I actually wrote the main script over a year ago... and then while putting it together I found a lot more commentary and jokes just worked their way in naturally. I like that Newt offers to pay his fair share by buying the popcorn, but only buys John a small cup... then eats it all before he gets any.
The photo-realistic Newt and Ant were always the intended gag... but it wasn't so easy to cut them out, clean them up, re-colour, and add 3D glasses just for a few panels.
If you were wondering why I chose the name "Alan Smithee" for the director... well, throughout Hollywood and television history, this name has been used by any director that disliked their final film so much, or had it changed from their original vision, that they wanted absolutely no part of it in the end... so they put "Alan Smithee" in the credits. There's a whole list of movies with this credit on IMDB and Wikipedia.
The movie name "Tidepool of Terror!" was a part of my original script. Something about it made me laugh. I couldn't come up with anything better, I looked it up on google, and no one else was using it... so I thought, good enough! The poster pretty much wrote the "Lousy Seagulls" comment from Newt in the first panel.
I hope you've enjoyed this episode! Lots more have been written, so I'll be adding more and more in the near future!
