"Newt and John" Comic - Episode 23 - "MUG-BOT"
Created By Mike Hogue - April 1/2010, Transcribed April 28th / 2010

Characters:

John - A red Ant with big glasses and a red bow-tie. John is a brainy Scientist and Inventor.

Newt - A green Newt with six orange spots on his back. Newt is John's sarcastic Roommate.

MUG-BOT - A robotic coffee mug. Mug-bot is a small, white, box-y robot supported by 6 wheels on his base. He has 2 glassy-red eyes, a temperature indicator for a mouth, a hollow head to hold liquids, and only one arm on his left side to use as a handle.

Setting: John's House - Messy Kitchen - Morning

Panel 1 - Newt and John's kitchen is covered with mess. Pots and pans are filling up the sink, and dishes and bowls are on the counter. There are food stains dripping from the sink to the floor. John is standing near the counter on the left, holding a coffee pot and his white coffee mug. Newt just woke up and entered the room, looking exhausted. He's hunched over, holding on to his chair for support, before hopping up on the stool to have breakfast. John sees Newt and says "The house is getting Messy! After breakfast we should get this place clean!" Adding... "Newt, you take the bathroom... and I'll clean the kitchen." Still hunched over, with his back to John, Newt responds with "Ugh... Tell me later, after I've had my coffee."

Panel 2 - In a closer view, Newt has hopped up on his chair, and is about to take a sip from his coffee mug, as he glances over at John pouring hot coffee into his mug. He asks, "New mug, John?". John smiles at the acknowledgment, and says "Why, that's my latest invention!"

Panel 3 - Closeup on John with a big smile on his face, as he holds his Coffee Mug Robot up in the air with his left hand. John proudly states "This is Mug-bot!" adding... "It has a built-in motion-sensor tracking system!"

Panel 4 - John puts down the coffee pot, and places Mug-bot on the floor Near the base of Newt's stool. He tells Newt, "I designed it to follow me around when I'm working in the Lab. So, I'll always have hot coffee at hand!"

Panel 5 - John moves a short distance away to the other side of Newt's stool. Mug-bot follows him stopping right at John's feet. John proudly says "Pretty clever, eh?"

Panel 6 - John picks up Mug-bot and puts him on the table in front of Newt. Newt comments on what a waste of time this silly invention was by telling John, "We really need to find you a girlfriend." John doesn't look impressed at the comment.

Panel 7 - After John has walked away to the other side of the kitchen, Newt is about to take another sip of coffee when Mug-bot turns to Newt and whispers "Pssst! You've got to help me!". Newt nearly drops his own mug in surprise! He has a shocked look on his face as he realizes Mug-bot is alive!

Panel 8 - Closeup on Mug-bot, we can see what looks like his mouth, but it's also a temperature gauge with an arrow pointing to Red-Hot! Mug-bot exlaims, "Please Help Me! This coffee is SO HOT!.. Oh why did Master install pain circuits in my head!" adding... "MILK! I need Milk to cool my brain!"

Panel 9 - Newt grabs the milk carton and is about to pour it into Mug-bot's head just as John turns around and catches him, yelling "NEWT! What are you doing? You know I take my coffee black!" Newt looks like he's been caught in the act and stops, causing Mug-bot to cry out "OH THE PAIN! Please!.. I need more milk!!!"

Panel 10 - Leaning in close, Newt suggests to Mug-bot, "Why don't you just tell him?" With a worried voice, Mug-bot replies "I fear he will remove my brain! Adding... "I want to live!"

Panel 11 - "I must buy some time!" Yells Mug-bot as he resorts to drastic measures, by picking up a butter knife and holding it over his head to defend himself!

Panel 12 - John has slipped and fallen on the floor. His cereal bowl is upside-down and there are bits of cereal, and puddles of milk all around him. "OH GREAT! Thanks a lot, Newt!" Yells John, "Now I have to make another bowl of Oatey Rings!". Without wasting a second, Newt Points his finger at Mug-bot and says, "But John, It was your Mug!!!" Still on his back, John points to the butter he slipped on that is melting down the bottom of his foot and adds, "Right Newt. Mug-bot Magically came to life just to throw a pat of butter at me."

Panel 13 - Closer on Mug-bot, he offers a deal to Newt to keep his secret. "Shhhh! Spare my life and I'll grant you any wish!" Newt thinks about it. "Hmmmm." Adds Newt as he rubs his chin with a devilish grin on his face.

Setting: John's House - Bathroom - Late Morning

Panel 14 - Looking down at the inside of a toilet bowl, we see Mugbot standing in the pool of water, holding a large toilet brush in his hand... and scrubbing away at the toilet. He no longer has coffee burning the inside of his head, and his temperature gauge is pointing at cool-blue. He stops for a moment and asks sarcastically, "When was the last time you cleaned under the rim of this thing?"

Panel 15 - While standing at the sink, Newt turns and leans on the sink with his right arm. He looks down at Mug-bot who's poking his head out of the toilet bowl and says "One more complaint, and I'm telling John where you've been!"

THE END.

The Evolution of "MUG-BOT"

It's taken over a year to get this comic online. I started working on it just after I had finished Episode 20, without knowing I'd get so busy with work that I wouldn't find the time or energy to finish it for over a year. I planned for this to be episode 21, but I thought the idea of "Jump the Shark" was more appropriate to bring back the series... and I couldn't let another April Fools Day pass without a comic either. So here we are at episode 23, and I'm glad I finally get to introduce MUG-BOT to the world! LOL.

MUG-BOT started out as a silly design I came up with in Google's Sketchup software. A box-y little robot with one arm. I was thinking of the classic "HERO-1" robots I would see in early 1980's science magazines, and the occasional TV show like "Whiz Kids". I always wanted one of these robots, even though I think I'd still be lost on how to build and program one.
I was such a nerd... heh, "was".

While working with the design, I thought he looked like a coffee mug with a handle. So I made his head a hollow shape and voila, MUG-BOT was born! This immediately sparked the idea of a robot designed to carry hot liquids, but was sadly built with pain-circuits in his head.
His purpose is his pain! ...Poor MUG-BOT!

MUG-BOT is the first 3D Character or prop I've made for Newt and John, that is turned into a 2D Flash Design. This allowed me to make many different angles of MUG-BOT to cover all the up and down-shots angles, and 2-Character closeup scenes in this comic. Notice that Newt and John are always a 3/4 angle, which works no matter what view we see of MUG-BOT. I also designed his temperature indicator to look like his mouth. It is set at 'Red Hot' for most of the comic until the last 2 panels where the arrow is pointing to 'Cool' Blue.

So, it's good to see that MUG-BOT survived his brain-trauma in this episode... so I can use him again in the future! In addition to building this little guy in 3D, I also created plans for a Paper Toy that you can download and print, then cut out, fold and glue your own 3D MUG-BOT! With that being said, I won't be able to upload the paper-toy kit until later this week... so check back to this commentary soon!
